<ed in the tournament placed among the top-20 finishers as No. 9-ranked Carleton College women’s golf captured the team title at the D3 Classic held at The Jewel Golf Club.
Carleton fired a tournament-record 9-over total of 297 in Saturday’s opening round. That is already the team’s fourth sub-300 round of the year and is tied for the third-best round (in relation to par) in program history. After turning in a 307 on Sunday, the Knights’ 36-hole total of 604 also tied for third best in team annals. The Knights finished the tournament 19 shots clear of second place College of Saint Benedict.
“The ladies performed extremely well in tough conditions on Saturday,” said Carleton head coach Molly Erickson. “The Jewel always provides a good challenge, but the high temps made for a couple of very long and testing days.
“This team has real grit and I know we experienced some frustrations on Sunday, but no one ever gave up on their round. Couldn’t be more proud of this team.”
Ayumi Sakamoto (Sr./Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani School) paced the Knights, taking second in the field of 75 golfers. She notched an even-par 72 on Sunday to wrap up the weekend with a 2-over total of 146.
Abby Euyang (So./Seattle, Wash./Lakeside) carded a career-best even-par 72 on Saturday en route to grabbing fourth place with a 4-over total of 148. Playing as an individual, Kristin Miyagi (Fy./Honolulu, Hawaii/’Iolani School) tied for eighth overall. (+9, 78-75=153).
Ziyi Wang (Sr./Beijing City, China/Lighthouse Christian Academy) started with a 76 on Saturday but slipped to 10th place overall after carding a 79 in the final round to finish the tournament at 11-over par.
After posting a 3-over par 75 on Saturday, Alexis Chan (So./Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon) also struggled a bit in the second round, completing the round with an 83 to finish in a tie for 14th with a 14-over total of 158.
Alyssa Akiyama (Jr./Terrace Park, Ohio/Seven Hills School) finished with scores of 80 on both days, placing her in a tie for 18th with a 16-over total for the weekend.
This marked Carleton’s 14th consecutive regular-season team victory, a stretch that dates back to April 15, 2017. The Knights also have a pair of top-7 results at the NCAA Championships over this 17-month span.
Carleton is back in action this coming weekend at the St. Catherine Invitational to be played at Bellwood Oaks Golf Club in Hastings, Minn. That will be the Knights’ final tune-up before the MIAC Championships the following weekend.
