<rleton’s cross country teams will host their only full-squad home meet of the season—the Running of the Cows—tomorrow in the upper arb.
The meet will celebrate the great history of running at Carleton, with 81 alumni spanning 59 years scheduled to be in attendance.
The festivities begin at 10 a.m. with the men’s 8-kilometer collegiate race. The Carleton harriers will face two alumni squads, one consisting of 2008 graduates and another consisting of pre-’08 “legends.”
Four other college teams will race as well, including Whitman College (WA), coached by Malcom Dunn ’93 and Cornell College (IA), led by Dan Schofer ’00. MIAC foe Augsburg and Winona State round out the field.
The gun will go off for the women’s 6-kilometer collegiate race at 10:45, followed by a 5k at 11:30, which is open to all alumni and students.
The Carleton women enter the weekend ranked 13th nationally and 3rd in the central region, fresh off an impressive victory at the James Early Invitational hosted by Westfield State college in Massachusetts. Simone Childs-Walker ’12 won the 5-kilometer race in 18:18.7, with teammates Laura Roach ’10, Taylor Ffitch ’12 and Karen Campbell ’09 close behind in 4th, 5th and 7th, respectively.
The men’s race will feature All-American Matt Hooley ’04, who ran in the 2008 Olympic marathon trials in New York City after running 2:19:57 to qualify. Hooley covered a slightly different (and more difficult) 8k course in 25:12 to win the Opener in 2006.
Among the alumni attendees are 14 All-Americans, including Quinn Batson ’82 and Chris Bierman ’83, who helped lead the Knights to the 1980 national championship.
Dale Kramer ’78 will bring his 7 All-America citations and three individual national championships (cross country ’76 and ’77, outdoor track 5000-meters ’78) to the reunion. Kramer boasts a 5000-meter personal best of 13:53, the second fastest time ever recorded in Division III.
Also in attendance will be three former coaches: Ele Hanson, Bill Huyck ’53 and Bill “Coach T” Terriquez ’70. The weekend will feature a graduate of the 1940’s, David Goode ’49, as well as 26 runners who graduated since 2000.
The only other opportunity to see the Knights in action at home this season will come November 6 with the Great Karhu Shoe Race, a dual meet with St. Olaf. However, neither team’s top 7 runners will participate, in anticipation of the central region championships the following weekend.
