Two decades of academic excellence for both soccer programs

For the 20th consecutive year, both the Carleton College women’s and men’s soccer teams earned the United Soccer Coaches’ (formerly the NSCAA) Team Academic Award for their work in the classroom.

To take home recognition, programs needed to post a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale) during the 2019-20 academic year. Despite the upheaval of spring term classes moving online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both Carleton squads easily surpassed that threshold.

The Carleton women posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.58. Under head coach Jocelyn Keller, the Knights stretched their active steak to 20 consecutive years, a claim only seven other NCAA women’s programs can match: Angelo State University (D-II), Bucknell University (D-I), University of Illinois (D-I), University of Pennsylvania (D-I), University of Scranton (D-III), Webster University (D-III), and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (D-I). Of the 11 other MIAC women’s programs, only three others own an active streak of at least 10 straight USC Team Academic Awards.

The Carleton men owned a 3.42 cumulative team GPA during the 2019-20 academic year. The men’s program garnered the Team Academic Award for the 21st consecutive year, the longest active streak across the 825 NCAA men’s programs (D-I, D-II, and D-III). Only two other MIAC men’s programs have an active streak of USC Team Academic Awards stretching at least 10 seasons. Bob Carlson’s squad has led the nation in grade-point average three times.

Carleton was one of 208 schools in the nation to have both its women’s and men’s programs receive the Team Academic Excellence Award. While this represents the 20th consecutive time the Knights have pulled off the double, only one other MIAC school (St. Olaf) has accomplished the feat in each of the last four years.
