<n Cameron (Fy./Reno, Nev./Reno) and Ada Meyer (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Ingraham) both broke school records on the final day of competition at the MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships. Those performances helped the Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team finish fifth out of 11 teams.
In the 200-yard butterfly, Cameron touched the wall at 2:09.20, breaking the oldest team record on the books. Kim Gillen established the previous mark of 2:09.39 back in 1983. Meredith Bergman (Sr./Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Day) and Anna Gergely (Sr./Denver, Colo./Jewish Day School) also scored points in the 200 fly on Sunday as they placed 14th and 16th, respectively, at 2:23.04 and 2:25.65.
During the morning preliminary round, Meyer posted a NCAA ‘B’ cut time as she went below the 2018 NCAA Championships selection time with a 2:21.41. That broke Kate Alexander’s team record (2:22.37) by nearly a full second.
Kate Grossman (So./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and Morgan Mayer (Jr./Garret Park, Md./Georgetown Day) contributed to the team’s point total as well. Grossman finished 14th in the finals at 2:31.02, while Mayer tied for 15th at 2:33.72.
Caroline Mather (Sr./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) turned in her 15th career All-MIAC swim when she placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 51.58. Kyle Fraser-Mines (So./Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsborough) took 11th in the finals after reaching the wall in 54.36.
Kapani Kirkland (Fy./Mendota Heights, Minn./Convent of the Visitation) took fourth place on the 1-meter diving board with her score of 397.15. She totaled 405.80 points during the prelims, which was good enough to earn qualify for the NCAA Central Zone regional diving meet to be at Wabash College (Ind.) on March 1-2. There are four regional diving competitions across the country, and the top 29 female divers from the four zone meets will qualify for the 2019 NCAA Championships to be held on March 20-23 in Greensboro, N.C.
Other individual scorers for Carleton on Sunday included Madison Smith (Fy./Denver, Colo./DSST) and Lydia Boyum (Fy./Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson). The former placed ninth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:15.59. The latter was 10th in the 200-yard backstroke after touching the wall in the finals at 2:10.38.
Additionally, Carleton’s entry in the 400-yard freestyle relay placed fifth. Fraser Mines, Cameron, Serena Lee (Fy./Muscat, Oman/TAISM), and Mather combined on a time of 3:38.22.
St. Thomas cruised to its fourth consecutive title, totaling 797 points. Gustavus narrowly edged St. Catherine for second place, 588 to 587, while St. Olaf (440 points) and Carleton (413.5 points) rounded out the top five.
