<rek Bos-Shadi (So./Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) scored the tying goal in the second half and added the game-winner in overtime as the Carleton College men’s soccer team overcame an early deficit to knock off the College of St. Scholastica, 2-1.
The game had barely started before St. Scholastica (4-3-1) struck. Alex Dodd made a nice run off some precise passing and buried the shot in the eighth minute. The rest of the first half saw Carleton (6-1-1) come close to equalizing multiple times, however, the Knights were unable to find their first goal despite holding a 12-4 edge in shots over the period as well as holding the visitors without an attempt for the final 20 minutes of the half.
The second half featured a much more even distribution of the chances, however the Knights proved to be the only team to manage to get a goal during the chaotic last 45 minutes of regulation.
Carleton tied things up in the 70th minute, after Alvin Bierley (So./Santa Cruz, Calif./Leland) took the ball away from the visitors in the midfield. He found William Lanzillo (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) on the left side, and the senior arced a cross into the box. Bos-Shadi rose with his back to the goal and—between two defenders—headed home a shot over the Saints’ keeper.
St. Scholastica almost came away with the winner a minute later, but Carleton goalkeeper Aaron Forman (So./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) preserved the tie when he raced off his line and stuffed a shot from a Saints forward Malcolm Lumsden, who had a full head of steam and was two steps behind the Carleton defense.
“Aaron made some great saves,” said Carleton head coach Bob Carlson. “I was really pleased with him coming up big for us, and we will need him to be that way the rest of the season.”
In the extra frame the Knights needed only one shot to send the Carleton fans home happy. Bierley chased down a loose ball and played it to Mark Roth (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) on the right wing. The senior defender sent the ball to the far post, finding Bos-Shadi unmarked for the point-blank shot.
The two-goal performance from Bos-Shadi places him in the team lead with four on the season. Roth and Lanzillo also maintained a tie for the team lead in assists with three each. Forman finished the day with four quality saves in net.
