Knights take sixth at MIAC championships

<ced by Donson Cook-Gallardo’s (Jr./Moscow, Idaho) victory in the 800-meter run, the Carleton College men’s track and field finished in sixth place at the 2017 MIAC Track and Field Championships.

“Our guys had a great meet with a lot of personal records,” said Carleton interim head coach Steve Dalhed. “It was a really close team race, with 11 points separating third and seventh place in the standings. For a young team, we competed really well against a lot of great competition. Events were strong across the board for the entire conference, but our guys held their own and came away with some great performances. We also had several guys just outside of scoring positions who will hopefully continue to improve and make an impact at the next conference championship meet.”

Donson Cook-Gallardo posted a MIAC Championships-record time of 1:49.88, bettering the previous conference meet standard—which had stood for three decades—by more than a full second. Fellow Knight Ben Withbroe (Sr./Takoma Park, Md./Albert Einstein) turned in a career-best time of 1:51.56, which is No. 15 in Division III and afforded him third place and all-conference in the event.

Cook-Gallardo and Withbroe were joined by rookies Bryan Richter (Des Moines, Iowa/Abraham Lincoln) and Joey Cook-Gallardo (Moscow, Idaho) in the 4×400-meter relay. The quartet ran a season-best time of 3:16.57, good for third place and all-conference honorable mention.

In the 4×100 meter relay, Richter, Maurice Hicks (Jr./Upper Marlboro, Md./Maret), Ben Schwartz (Fy./Mankato, Minn./Mankato East), and Austin Baxter (Fy./Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) earned third place with a season-best time of 42.26 seconds.

Walter Edstrom (Sr./Plano, Texas/Plano West) notched an all-conference performance in the 5000-meter run with a third-place finish (15:29.46). He added an honorable mention nod in the 1500-meter run, taking fifth with a time of 3:59.64.

First-years Justin Washington (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) and Baxter went 3-4 in the 400-meter hurdles with times of 54.86 and 55.06, respectively. Fellow rookies Joey Cook-Gallardo and Richter went 7-8 in the 400-meter dash (49.30, 49.80) to add to the Knights’ point total.
Jack Buckner (Jr./Seattle, Wash./Northwest) added All-MIAC honorable mention in the javelin with his season-best throw of 53.25 meters
