Swimming makes splash in Iowa

<wa -- Maria Wetzel (Jr./Salem, Ore./West Salem) won two events and added another second-place result in leading the Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team at the Luther College Sprint Invite. She won the 500-yard freestyle with her time of 5:22.64 and prevailed in the 100-yard IM by reaching the wall at 1:02.84. She also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke with her time of 1:01.15.

Caroline Mather (Fy./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) had the Knights’ other top-two result, finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle when she touched the wall at 25.18.

Marly Schrom (Fy./Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) and Anisa Lester (So./Corte Madera, Calif./The Branson School) were the “Can of Corn” Award recipients after being selected by the Carleton coaching staff as the squad’s swimmers-of-the-meet.

Schrom notched a ninth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:52.93 and added times of 2:11.71 in the 200-yard freestyle, 28.53 in the 50-yard freestyle, and 32.08 in the 50-yard butterfly. Lester’s best individual finish was a sixth-place showing in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 25.92. She bettered her 50 fly seed time by more than 1.5 seconds, touching the wall at 29.77, and swam anchor on the Knights’ B entry in the 200-yard medley relay, which finished in 2:00.47.

Mather, Lester, Brittany Salazar (Sr./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco Waldorf), and Alex Braiedy (Jr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) finished third out of 16 entries in the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.28.

Other top-five results for the Knights:
• Wetzel, Anna Gergely (Fy./Denver, Colo./Jewish Day School), Braiedy, and Mather started the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with their time of 1:56.47.
• Halie Langanki
(Sr./Lino Lakes, Minn./Mounds View) placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 2:05.4. She also posted a fifth-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:41.49.
• Salazar finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly, taking more than two seconds off her season-best time and finishing at 1:04.34.
• Braiedy placed fourth in the 50-yard butterfly at 28.29 and was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.00.

The Knights will host the College of Saint Benedict in a dual meet next Saturday, Jan. 23 at 12 p.m.
