The Carleton College women’s basketball team (7-13, 5-8 MIAC) limited visiting Gustavus Adolphus College (14-6, 8-5 MIAC) to 35.3 percent shooting from the field on Wednesday night, but turnovers cost the Knights dearly as they were bested at home, 62-34.

“We didn’t come out with the effort and intensity needed to compete tonight,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “Defensively, we forced them to take the right kind of shots, but failed to secure the rebound. Offensively, we were timid and passive with the ball which led to too many unforced turnovers.”

Carleton led 9-6 early on, but the Gusties went on a 17-0 spurt that changed the complexion of the contest. The Knights trailed 38-20 at intermission and went on to commit a season-worst 28 turnovers, leading to 34 points for the Gusties. The visitors also grabbed 21 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second-chance points.

The Gusties were paced by Mikayla Miller, who led both teams in scoring with a career-best 31 points and eight steals. She was the lone player from either squad to finish.

The Knights were paced by Nnenna Ezem (Fy./Berkely, Ill./Proviso West Academy), who scored nine points off the bench.

Carleton returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 against national No. 2 University of St. Thomas as part of a road doubleheader with the men’s team. Tipoff for the ladies is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Live audio will be available on KDHL 920 AM.
