Marcus Huderle ’14 was not ready to hang up his uniform yet. The senior steeplechaser made his second career appearance at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, posting a time of 9:09.16 during the prelims and earning him one last collegiate race in Saturday’s event final in Delaware, Ohio.
Huderle took the lead from the gun to give him the best chance to advance to the finals, and the plan worked.
“He ran one of his best races ever and still saved a little in the tank,” explained head coach Dave Ricks. “So the race was very encouraging. He ran the smoothest race of the athletes in his heat.”
Huderle, who placed 12th at the 2012 national meet, was consistent on Thursday, turning in splits between 72.71 and 74.23 during the middle five laps.
He used possibly his best closing kick in a steeplechase over the last half-lap and finished fifth in his heat.
Huderle’s time of 9:09.16 is the fastest in the MIAC this year and has only been surpassed in Carleton history by his own 9:06.87 and Dan Bucy’s school record time of 9:05.88. He would have one more shot at Bucy’s record the next day
“Marcus has had a great career as the most dominant steepler in Carleton history,” said Ricks. “Dan Bucy had a great career, and we’ll see if Marcus can re-write the record book one last time.”
DAY 2
Huderle concluded his collegiate career with a 14th-place finish in the steeplechase at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
After turning in the top time in the MIAC this season with a 9:09.16 during the preliminary round, the senior was unable to replicate that feat and posted a time of 9:39.57 in the finals.
Falling short of Bucy’s Carleton record, Huderle has nevertheless had an impressive career. This was Huderle’s second trip to nationals, having placed 12th in the same event at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
