<ur members of the Carleton College track and field teams head to Ohio this week to take part in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships from May 22-24. Senior Marcus Huderle will make his second trip to the national outdoor meet, while Amelia Campbell ‘16, Colette Celichowski ‘15, and Kao Sutton ‘14 will take their first visit to this competition after all three represented the Carleton women’s program at the national indoor championships in March.
This year’s national outdoor meet is hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Deleware, Ohio.
Huderle’s final collegiate competition will come on the biggest stage. He takes part in the preliminary round of the 3000-meter steeplechase on Thursday. Fourteen of the 20 entered runners—the top five from each heat plus the next four fastest times—will advance to Saturday’s finals. Huderle is seeded 18th with a season-best time of 9:12.47 at the MIAC Championships. He was also seeded 18th entering nationals in 2012 when he finished 12th at the NCAA Championships in the same event. Huderle also gained experience on the national stage as a member of the Carleton men’s cross country team that placed 16th at the NCAA Championships this past fall.
Campbell is the top seed in the heptathlon, after scoring a school- and conference-record 5,132 points at the MIAC Championships. That figure ranks her fifth all-time in Division III history. Campbell was the national champion in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this year. If she wants to complete the multi-event sweep, she will have to contend with a talented 22-person field in the heptathlon, which is contested over the first two days of competition.
Celichowski earned a spot in the 1500-meter run and is seeded 17th in the 22-racer field after posting a season-best time of 4:35.12. She made her nationals debut in March at the NCAA Indoor Championships, placing 10th in the mile run. At the outdoor meet, a dozen runners—the top four from each heat plus the next four fastest times—will advance out of the preliminary round and into Saturday’s finals.
Sutton makes her second trip to nationals this academic year after earning All-America distinction by placing fourth in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships. This time, she will instead compete in the discus, where Sutton is seeded third after registering a school-record distance of 46.71 meters earlier this season. The discus will be contested on Saturday afternoon.
