<rleton College track and field star Amelia Campbell ‘15 completed a sweep of the MIAC multi-event competitions, adding a decisive victory in the heptathlon to the pentathlon crown she earned during the indoor season. Over the last two days Campbell accumulated 5,132 points, breaking the Carleton, MIAC Championships, and overall MIAC records for the heptathlon. That point total also ranks fifth all-time in NCAA Divison III.
Campbell entered the MIAC Heptathlon already in possession of the top score in Division III this season, having previously accumulated 4,947 points at the CSB-SJU Multis in early April. She bettered that figure by nearly 200 points, and her MIAC Heptathlon score would rank third in Division II this season and 52nd in Division I.
Campbell placed first in six of the seven events over the two days, including two of the three competitions on Friday. She opened the second day with the long jump, recording the field’s top leap of 5.35 meters (17 feet, 6.75 inches), registering that distance on both her first and third attempts.
Upon moving to the javelin, Campbell finished second overall as she posted a distance of 31.51 meters (103 feet, 4 inches) on her third throw.
Campbell entered the final event, the 800-meter run, with nearly a 700-point lead on eventual runner-up Bailey Cook of St. Thomas. Campbell was pushed by mid-race by Concordia’s Mikayla Forness, but the Carleton sophomore passed the Cobber rookie and registered a personal best, crossing the finish line at 2:16.59.
Campbell’s tally bettered the previous MIAC Championships mark 4,829 points was established by Concordia’s Kaari Jensen in 2012. Campbell also improved upon the overall conference standard set by Gustavus’ Janey Helland (5,061 points) and the 2011 NCAA Championships.
