<rleton College women’s track and field day got the outdoor season started on Saturday as the Knights hosted the Carleton Invitational. All-American Kao Sutton ‘14 picked up where her indoor season left off as she broke the nearly 19-year-old school record in the outdoor shot put with her heave of 13.28 meters.
“This caps a busy week for Kao,” said Carleton head coach Donna Ricks. “She had to turn in her comps and do a presentation, and then to pull off the school record on top of that is pretty impressive.”
Sutton placed second overall today and eclipsed the previous mark established by Michelle Eisenreich at the 1995 NCAA Championships. Sutton was also the runner up in the discus throw, registering a distance of 39.82 meters (130 feet, 8 inches), which trailed only a Division II student-athlete from Minnesota State-Mankato.
Carleton won three events on the day and finished third in the seven-team competition with 108 points. Saint Benedict took top honors with 157 points followed by Concordia College-Moorhead at 124 points.
Ruth Steinke ‘16 posted a time of 4:45.61 in the 1500-meter run. That mark was tops among the 43-racer field.
Amelia Campbell ‘16 got her outdoor season started with two triumphs. She posted a nearly two-second margin of victory in the 100-meter hurdles, crossing the line at 15.45 despite running into the wind.
“My goal there was ‘Let’s get through a flight of 10. I don’t care what your time is.’ In Amelia fashion she went out and PR’d,” said Ricks.
Campbell’s time ranks seventh on Carleton’s all-time list. She was also first to the line in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.97, edging teammate Ellie Wilson ‘15 by 0.17 second.
“Lot of really good things happened. The whole philosophy behind this meet was for the team to get out and get used to the big track again because it feels different going from a 200 to a 400. Depending on what race you are doing, those long straightaways change up your thought process. For us it was important to get the feel of a big track again and be able to transfer our racing strategies from indoors to outdoors.”
Colette Celichowski ‘15 and Winona Rachel ‘17 placed second and third, respectively, in the 800-meter run as the duo posted times of 2:19.33 and 2:22.24.
Avery Johnson ‘15 finished second in the javelin throw with her distance of 33.79 meters (110 feet, 10 inches)
Other top results for the Knights include Wilson taking third in the 100-meter dash at 13.50, and Claire Trujillo ‘17 also finishing third in the 5000-meter run at 18:55.10.
