<mey ‘14 scored 17 points to lead four Knights in double figures, but an upset bid by the Carleton College women’s basketball team evaporated early in the second half as the squad lost, 84-60, at Concordia College.
“We competed hard tonight with a very physical, aggressive Concordia team,” said Carleton head coach Cassie Kosiba. “It was an exciting first half. Our shooting has come back around thanks to some great passing tonight. Despite their run early in the second half, we never gave up, and for that I am very proud.”
The Knights (5-7, 3-16 MIAC) gave the playoff-bound Cobbers (18-4, 16-3 MIAC) all they could handle over the first 20 minutes of play. Carleton shot 48 percent in the period and carried a 36-33 advantage into the locker room.
The lead was aided by the Knights going 6-of-12 from beyond the arc over the opening stanza. Michele Arima ‘16 drained a triple with 13:34 to go in the first half, not only giving Carleton its largest lead of the contest at four points but also tying the school record for three pointers in a season with a conference-best 149. It only took three more minutes to break the mark, with Ramey doing the honors with her three-point jumpshot. Jessica Huang ‘14 joined the long-range barrage by draining of trio of triples later in the half en route to a career-best 13 points.
While the hot-shooting performance had Carleton positioned for an upset midway through the game, after intermission it was a different story. The Knights made only 24 percent of their second-half shot attempts while Concordia shot 64.5 percent.
The Cobbers came out of the locker room and went on a 10-0 burst as part of a longer 28-9 run that put the hosts comfortably in front en route to their 12th consecutive victory in the series.
Gabbi Stienstra ‘16 added 13 points to the Carleton effort, and Arima chipped in 11 of her own.
Greta Walsh led Concordia with 21 points, and Alexandra Lippert notched a double-double with 10 points and a dozen rebounds.
Before closing the season with a pair of home games, the Knights will hit the road one final time, traveling to College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, Feb. 15 for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
