<rleton College men’s swimming and diving team took part in the two-day Conference Invite, the final full meet before the MIAC Championships in two weeks. Strong swims during the relay events buoyed the Knights’ efforts.
Racing on Friday night began and ended with relay victories. George McAneny ‘16, Stephen Grinich ‘16, Benito Ramirez ‘14, and Evan Lahr ‘17 opened the meet with the win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 1:24.94.
Competition on day one closed with Aaron Schwab ’17, Evan Harris ‘15, Ramirez, and Eric Hazoury ‘16 winning the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:40.14.
In individual events, Alex Mathson ‘17 took second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:47.77. In the next event, the 200-yard individual medley, Harris and Ross Brown ‘14 combined to take second and third, respectively, with times of 2:00.09 and 2:02.32. Grinich and Lahr did the same in the 50 freestyle sprint, with respective times of 21.32 and 21.40.
Saturday saw Carleton open with a fourth-place result in the 200 medley relay. Mathson grabbed third place in the 400 IM, reaching the wall at 4:17.76.
Grinich continued his fine meet with a time of 52.26, good for a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Ramirez and Harris placed second and fourth, respectively in the 200-yard freestyle. The duo registered finishing times of 1:47.10 and 1:47.69.
Jesse Gourevitch ‘14 turned in a strong individual effort as his fourth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke came in 1:01.88.
Silas Taylor ‘15 raced to a fifth-place result in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall at 56.34.
The Knights concluded session two with a second-place finish in the tightly contested 800-yard freestyle relay. Taylor, McAneny, Aaron Reynolds ‘17, and Mathson finished second with a time of 7:29.75.
Carleton placed five in the top 10 of the 100-yard freestyle. Grinich again came through for the Knights, taking third time of 47.45, followed by McAneny (48.05) and Harris (48.19) in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Ross Brown next took fourth in the 200-yard breastroke, finishing at 2:17.50.
Ramirez concluded the individual events portion of the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.75. He was followed next by Will Sparks (2:03.09).
Carleton returned to its relay-winning ways in the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Lahr and Harris, along with Wilson Josephson ‘16 and Jonathan Brodie ‘16 came out atop the field with a time of 3:11.24 – a narrow victory, two tenths of a second in front of the entry from St. Thomas’s team.
The Knights will take part in the MIAC Championships on February 13-15 at the University of Minnesota’s Aquatic Center.
