<r Tsutsui ‘15 had 14 points and Emma Purfeerst ‘14 narrowly missed a double-double, as the Carleton College women’s basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 51-48 decision at Augsburg College.
The Knights (4-8, 2-7 MIAC) carried a five-point lead into halftime and scored the first eight points of the second half to build a 38-25 advantage. The Auggies (7-4, 4-4 MIAC) countered with a 14-0 run spanning six minutes to retake the lead with 10:33 remaining.
A pair of Jenny Ramey ‘14 free throws later put the Knights back in front 47-43 with 6:50 to go, but Augsburg closed the game on an 8-1 spurt to pull out the victory.
After getting beat on the boards during the first four games of 2014, Carleton edged the Auggies, 34-30, with Purfeerst pulling down nine boards to go along with 13 points. Ramey and Michele Arima ‘16 each had four steals as the Knights registered a season-best 12 takeaways. Ramey also scored 8 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
Jessica Lillquist tallied a game-high 16 points to lead the home team, which shot 50 percent in the second half to complete the comeback.
Carleton currently sits at ninth in the conference, just a game behind Gustavus Adolphus, and two back from The College of St. Benedict Blazers. The Knights will have a chance to gain some ground on the Blazers when they face off at Carleton’s West Gymnasium this Saturday at 1 PM.
