Women’s Soccer Finish Season with Loss to Olaf

<son drew to a close for the Carleton College women’s soccer team (7-6-4, 3-5-3 MIAC) with a disappointing result against cross-town rival St. Olaf College. Despite out-shooting the hosts 18-13, including 13-6 in shots on goal, the Knights absorbed a 2-1 setback after a late goal gave the Oles the victory and a spot in the MIAC Playoffs.

St. Olaf (8-6-4, 6-3-2 MIAC) scored first when Anna Theis slotted home a rebound following a corner kick. But Bailey Ulbricht ‘15 tallied the equalizer less than two minutes later. She collected the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, spun toward the inside and tucked her left-footed shot inside the left post for her fourth goal of the season.

Ulbricht nearly provided another highlight-reel score in the 50th minute. Her long range attempt was beyond the outstretched arms of the St. Olaf goalkeeper Nora Forbes. In a sign that this was not to be the Knights’ day, the shot deflected off the left post. Marlena Hartman-Filson ‘13 raced in for the rebound but was unable to get off a clean shot before Forbes smothered the loose ball in the box.
The Oles finally broke the deadlock with a goal in the 82nd minute. Following a scramble in front of the Carleton net, Kajsa Brindley converted a shot from the left side. The Knights did not get off another shot in regulation.

Today marked the final collegiate game for seniors Lesley Baseman, Sarah Hagerty, Hartman-Filson, Karlie Haug, Claire McGillem, and Megan Morrison.
The class of 2013 went 43-21-13 (.643) overall including trips to the NCAA Championships in 2009 and 2010.
