< battling illness last week, Guthrie Cunningham ‘14 helped guide the Carleton College men’s cross country team to an 11th-place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. That is the Knights best team finish at this event since 2007.
The Knights were the lone team in the top 20 that had three rookies score. Jonah Barry ‘16 was first to finish for Carleton, posting a time of 27:01.5, good for 39th. Guthrie was next, finishing 64th with a time of 27:37.1.
Joe Haase ‘16 and Hart Hornor ‘16 finished 74th and 84th respectively. Thor Laack-Veeder ‘15 was the other scorer; his time ranked 76th out of the 272 runners in the event.
While Barry and Hornor ran their first-ever 8-kilometer races, Haase was a bit of a surprise by running third on the team today. After spending 40 days above the Arctic Circle hiking this past summer, he had been the squad’s No. 12-14 runner so far this season .
“The freshmen really stepped it up today, with 1-3-5 finishes from them,” said Carleton head coach Dave Ricks. “We knew that Jonah and Hart would run well. They have been doing a great job in workouts. We told them to be patient with the longer race, but they really have to experience it first to know how patient they really need to be.”
The Knights race again in two weeks when they take part in the Tim Young Invitational hosted by the University of South Dakota on Oct. 13.
