<hool year has been a great year for Carleton sustainability. In addition to continuing past initiatives, new major projects were implemented and we even gained recognition for our efforts. Here’s a brief recap of the major events this year.
• The Second Wind Turbine – In November, our generously donated second wind-turbine directly tied to our electrical grid went online supplying about 25-30% of our power usage.
• Carleton Community Waste Program – As you may have noticed, compost has been spreading to academic buildings this year thanks to the new Carleton Community Waste Program. By next year, compost should be in all academic buildings!
• New Website – After lots of hard work, the new and improved Carleton Sustainability Website is up! It is now full of facts that you always wanted to know about sustainability at Carleton.
• Climate Leadership Finalist – Carleton became a 2012 Climate Leadership Award Finalist. The award recognizes schools of higher education that are making strides towards trying to deal with climate change.
• Residential Energy Audit Program – Several college houses underwent energy audits this winter as part of a pilot program for eventually auditing audits all campus buildings. Students also participated in a four-class program to learn about energy audits and building efficiency.
• Drying Racks – Floor drying racks have been making their way into the dorms in the past couple of weeks. They are not all here yet, but they should all be here and ready for use in all of the dorms next fall.
These are just some of the many events that happened this year. Hopefully, next year will be as productive as this year! And remember that anyone and everyone can be involved in making not just Carleton but our lifestyles more sustainable.
