Ted Marschall sets three pool records as Knights take second at Saint Mary’s

<rleton College men’s swimming and diving team finished second out of three teams at a meet hosted by Saint Mary’s University on Saturday. Ted Marschall ‘09 led the Knights, setting three pool records during his trio of first-place finishes and recording a pair of provisional NCAA Championship qualifying times.

Luther College won the team competition with 1012 points. Carleton was second at 858, and SMU totalled 343 points.

He established a personal best with a pool-record 100 yard breaststroke time of 57.95. His winning time of 2:06.65 in the 200 breaststroke was a season best and more than eight seconds faster than his nearest competitor. Both times are provisional NCAA Championship qualifying marks.

His final event title and pool record came in the 200 IM, touching the wall at 1:55.71. In addtion to Marschall’s victories, the Knights had second-place finishes in the 200 medley relay, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 freestyle relay.Andrew Mering ‘11, Marschall, Elliot Bartis ‘09 and Jared Plotz ‘09 finished less than six-tenths of a second behind the team from Luther in the meet-opening 200 medley relay. After trailing after the opening leg, Marschall gave Carleton the lead mid-way through the event. Entering the freestyle leg the teams were nearly tied.

Mering also placed second in the 100 backstroke, third in the 200 backstroke and was a member of the second-place 200 freestyle relay

Joining him on the final relay were Alan Goodyear ‘10 David Nonberg ‘09 and Teddy Gelderman ‘11. Ryan Terrien ‘09 finished third in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 backstroke. The Knights next competition will come when they host the Carleton Mini Invite at 12 noon on Saturday, Jan. 19.
