Last Sunday, Carleton received a visit from Wendy Davis, a former Texas senator and 2014 gubernatorial candidate. Ms. Davis made headlines in 2013 when she stood for nearly 13 hours to filibuster the notorious TRAP law HB2, which would have closed all but five of Texas’s abortion clinics.
Ms. Davis’s visit was organized by Carls For Hillary, which has been connected to the state-wide campaign structure since September. The club was contacted by the campaign Field Organizer who thought that Carleton would be a good place for the event.
Advocating for Hillary’s nomination, Ms. Davis shared her story eloquently and persuasively, campaigning for Hillary’s merit as a leader for women’s issues. She emphasized the fact that Hillary is the first candidate to receive an official endorsement from NARAL and Planned Parenthood for being a leader for women’s rights.
Despite Bernie Sanders’s popularity on campus (and evidently in Minnesota, from Tuesday’s caucus results), Hannah Quinn ’16, President of Carls For Hillary, does not feel dismayed. Quinn says the club is “still confident that (Hillary) will earn the Democratic nomination, but [they] also think that the most important thing is keeping a Democrat in the White House.”
Hence, whichever candidate receives the nomination “will have (their) full support,” echoing what Ms. Davis stated in her speech.
