Early this summer, Zach Brokaw, Class of 2018, passed away in a tragic car accident. He was nineteen years old and from Woodstock, IL.
Full of spirit and always wanting to learn new things, Zach loved the environment and channeled this passion into his articles and participation in campus environmental organizations.
Zach was a valued staff writer and friend. His patience and dry sense of humor in the newsroom late Thursday nights carried the team through the stress with a smile. His snarky creativity flared in the 2015 April Fool’s Issue, a project of which he was an integral leader.
He had a strong sense of loyalty and would go out of his way to attend events that were important to his friends. He did this because he cared deeply about those around him and realized that the most important thing anyone can be is a great friend.
Outside the context of the newspaper, Zach was a friend to many. The familiar sight of him on campus, his fashion style not unlike a vintage reporter, was always a welcome one. He never failed to greet people with a slight and kind smile. Maya Angelou said that “people will never forget how you made them feel.” Zach, we will miss you.
