Men’s Swimming Tops Hamline to Win Second Straight Dual Meet

<rleton College men’s swimming team faced off against the visitors from Hamline University on Friday evening. The Knights swam well, and the Pipers small squad size led to a fairly easy victory for Carleton, 206-74.

“The biggest part of the meet is that it’s the final chance to see the students swimming critical events in which they’d be considered for selection to the MIAC Championship meet,” said head coach Andy Clark, “It’s nice to see the teams post some season-best marks, and it helps us decide the best possible combination for the conference meet.”

The team got off to a strong start in the 200-yard medley relay, in which the “A” team of Jonathan Brodie ‘16, Ross Brown ‘14, Evan Lahr ‘17, and Alex Mathson ‘17 took first in 1:42, beating out the visitors’ squad by nearly twelve seconds.

Mathson and Brodie, along with teammate Aaron Schwab ‘17, swept the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle: Mathson took first in 1:48.79, followed by Schwab (1:50.03) and Brodie (1:54.44).

Jesse Gourevitch ‘14, Christian Edwards ‘14, and Silas Taylor ‘16 performed a similar feat in the 100 backstroke, going 1-2-3, respectively.
In the short, fast 50 freestyle, it was George McAneny ‘16 who led the Knights with a time of 21.84, followed by Benito Ramirez ‘14 (22.47) and Stephen Grinich ‘16 (22.53).

In the 200-yard breastroke, Lahr took first at 2:23.32 with Will Sparks ‘15 placing second in 2:25.11 and Grant Terrien ‘17 pulling in third at 2:26.11.

Other notable wins for the Knights included a victories by Eli Danson ‘15 in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:20.38 and 200 butterfly at 2:05.40.

However, the meet’s “Can of Corn”—awarded to the best Carleton swimmer at the meet—went to Schwab. His performance in the 200 free, along with a second-place, 49.84 finish in the 100 free, marked season-best times for him.

The Knights next hit the water on Saturday, Jan. 25 when they will face St. Olaf College
