<n Lahr ‘17 continued his amazing rookie season with two more individual event crowns and a relay victory as the Carleton College men’s swimming team defeated Saint John’s University, 145-135.
After a narrow six-point loss to the Johnnies last year, the Knights posted their first dual meet victory over Saint John’s in at least a decade. Adding to the satisfaction of the triumph is that today’s victory came only 20 hours after a tight contest at Gustavus Adolphus.
“Team energy was a big catalyst for the performances we had today,” said head coach Andy Clark, “I’m impressed and proud of what they accomplished.”
Lahr was dubbed the squad’s swimmer-of-the meet and earned the “Can of Corn” award. He placed first in the speedy 50 freestyle, with a time of 21.81. He followed that up with another victory in the 100 freestyle, finishing in 48:28. Lahr, along with teammates Stephen Grinich ‘16, Wilson Josephson ‘16, and Benito Ramirez ‘14 sealed the team victory with a first-place result in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.53).
Alex Mathson ‘17 led the Knights in long-distance events. He took first in the 1000 freestyle, finishing in 10:13.77, and also triumphed in the 500-yard freestyle, which he completed in 4:58.89.
Aided the Knights’ efforts was Evan Harris ‘15, who dominated a variety of 200-meter events for the maize and blue. Harris placed first in the 200-yard individual medley, with a time of 2:00.40. He also won the 200 freestyle, with a time of 1:50.42, then touched first in the 200-breastroke with a time of 2:17.20 for a three-second margin of victory.
Aaron Schwab ‘17 also boosted the Knights’ efforts with a victory in the 200 backstroke in 2:02.78.
The Knights will swim next against MIAC foe Hamline University in Thorpe Pool on Friday, Jan. 17. Swimming begins at 6:00 pm.
