Knights split doubleheader with Hamline Pipers

<nny Shields ’14 recorded his first career shutout as the Knights defeated Hamline, 1,0, before falling 5-3 to the  Hamline University Pipers in the second game of a doubleheader.

Throughout the first game, Shields allowed only three hits—all singles—and one walk. He was at his best throughout the middle innings, striking out eight straight batters between the third and fifth innings. Throughout the game, Hamline’s top seven hitters went only 1-for-20 against him. With six strikeouts, Shields matched his career high in strikeouts; he also tied the team high for strikeouts this season (Anderson Cole ’14 also has six strikeouts).

Despite Shields’ stellar performance, the Knights could not capitalize on several good scoring chances, leaving runners on second and third in the first inning, and the bases loaded in the second. The Knights did not score until the fourth inning, when Erik Fabry ’12 was batted in on a single from Nolan Baker ’15. Fortunately, Hamline was also unable to score throughout the rest of the game, and the Knights took the first game, 1-0.

In the second game, however, Carleton had more trouble containing the Pipers, as the game went back and forth. After the Pipers scored twice in the opening inning, Jacob Rice ’13 answered with a two-run, two-out single, before Hamline scored again in the second.  Ray Yong ’14 equalized with another run in the third, but the Knights fell behind once again as the Pipers scored twice more in the seventh inning. David Stillerman ’14 managed to put runners on the corners, with a single to right field, but the Knights were unable to cash in, and lost the second game, 5-3.

The Knights travel to Wartburg College in Iowa for another doubleheader this Saturday.
