ugh the weather may not be fully cooperating, this year’s Spring Concert committee is gearing up as they plan the campus’s biggest and most popular student event of the year. Student Activities released the list of potential headliners yesterday, with students able to vote on their favorite until this Tuesday. Students can cast their vote for the following bands to perform at the annual music concert, to be held this year on May 19: Antibalas Bonobo Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr Holy F*ck Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit K-OS People Under the Stairs The Dean’s List Twin Sister The committee is in the “most exciting stages of its planning” right now, said Nadine Sunderland, the committee’s staff advisor and assistant director of Student Activities. “The students are in the midst of choosing the music for the concert and are now getting down to their short list.” The committee plans to make a list of three or four bands from which students can choose the headliner. With the results of the poll, the committee will put together its preferred lineup by the end of the term and then begin contacting bands to determine cost and availability. The lineup will be released once all the contracts are signed, most likely only two weeks before the event, as Sunderland says there are always last-minute changes. Spring Concert is scheduled for Saturday of eighth weekend, from 2 to 10 p.m. The Spring Concert committee is made up of 20 students who meet weekly with the goal to make “a fun and exciting event for their peers,” Sunderland said. “The planning is all student driven. I just advise them.” The committee’s chairs are Julia Baker ‘12, Sonali Gupta ‘12, and Dylan Gessner ‘12, who are all members of the Student Activities Programming Board. “I am really happy that there is a really dedicated group of students this year,” Sunderland said. “I think they are much more representative of the student body in terms of music taste.” In addition to choosing the music, the committee is responsible for planning the logistics of the concert, such as setting up and cleaning up, serving alcohol, securing vendors and working with Bon Appétit to plan the menu for the concert. Bon Appétit began serving dinner at the concert only two years ago, and Sunderland says she believes it has been a good addition to the event. The committee will begin planning logistics and recruiting student DJs next term. Sunderland said there will not be major changes to the concert from last year, though she does hope vendors will agree to accept Schillers this year. Baker said she hopes to make the concert “more festival-like.” The same alcohol policy will be in place, with students who are over 21 being given wristbands to drink. There will also likely be four bands, with student DJs playing between bands and two student bands opening the event. The faculty band the Counterfactuals may make an appearance, as well. Over 100 students help in the planning and setup of the concert. Additionally, Sunderland says, almost 800 students voted in the poll for bands last year. This year’s poll and a sampling of the bands’ music will be available on the Student Activities website, go.carleton.edu/activities.
