Women’s Basketball bested by Hamline in final home game

<zouman ‘13 narrowly missed a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds and tallying a game-high 20 points, but the Carleton College women’s basketball team struggled late and lost its final home contest of the season, 51-47 to Hamline University.

The back-and-forth contest featured 11 ties and seven lead changes. Carleton (2-20, 1-19 MIAC) and Hamline (7-15, 6-13 MIAC) finished nearly equal in every statistical category. The Knights shot just 33 percent from the field but limited the Pipers to only 27 percent shooting.

The lead changed hands five times over the course of the first half as the score remained close with neither team building more than a four-point advantage. Hamline carried a 21-18 lead into intermission.

Carleton erased a four-point deficit and eventually knotted the score at 30-30 with 11:47 remaining in the second half. Arzouman converted a layup off a nice feed from Jenny Ramey ‘14 to spark Carleton on an 8-2 run that gave the hosts their largest lead of the contest with 7:59 remaining.

The Knights’ momentum ran out there, though, as the Pipers put together a game-sealing 17-3 run spanning the next seven-plus minutes. Carleton suddenly went cold, going 1-of-8 from the field during that stretch to go along with a pair of turnovers.

Ramey was the only other Knight in double figures, finishing with 11 points. She also matched her career high with eight rebounds.

Jordan Sammons led Hamline in scoring, totaling 15 points in the game. Teammate Kara Poirier scored ten of her dozen points in the second half.

Carleton hits the road for the final three games of its campaign. That stretch begins at St. Catherine University on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3:00 p.m. Live audio will be available through Knights Online.
