<ll, and that means IM’s galore! Although the premature chills and rain might hamper some leagues, Carls are just that dedicated, or crazy, with some of the wettest days being the most attended. There are currently 7 leagues (Flag Football, 3x3 Basketball, Ultimate, Tennis, Sand Volleyball, Dodgeball, and the new addition Racquetball). While we don’t keep stats, rest assured we won’t keep you in the dark about how things are going of you haven’t been able to make it to some games and cheer on you’re favorite teams.
Flag Football currently has 4 teams: The Knights, G.E.T. S.O.M.E. (Geoff’s Extremely Talented Squad of Malt-O-Meal Enthusiasts), Kab Mob, and the 4th Hueligans. The Knights and GET SOME are both primarily staffed by the baseball team and are perennial gamers. For the past year the Knights have dominated GET SOME, but this year it looks like GET SOME is the better team. On the other end of the spectrum, the 4th Hueligans are a freshman team that has a lot of heart to make up for their relative lack of skill. In the middle is Kab Mob, who have been around longer than this senior. Each year the team comes out and usually gets beat, but this year they look pretty good. They might be able to take down the Knights sometime soon, and we could see a surprise finals match-up between Kab Mob and GET SOME.
Basketball has had to deal with the graduation of some IM bball greats, most notably Richard Hooker, but the teams seem up to the task. Division one has seen some great competition with Dunk Tape leading the league, having lost one game to MOC. Jae Chan continues to impress with his shiftiness and has proven game after game he can score almost anywhere on the court. Division 2 is led by unbeaten Arvydas (can’t beat us) Sabonis but there have been some very good games played. Overall the second half of the season should be exciting especially once the playoffs start.
Dodgeball league is also flourishing in characteristically wacky fashion. The Itchy Shirts, featuring fearless Owen “kamikaze” McMurtrey, have already won the Charmander Division. Squirtle and Bulbasaur divisions are moving forward now, and I’m happy to say that every team is showing great enthusiasm and ball-hurling skills. The extensive playoff series will begin after regular season games have finished 8th week.
For Ultimate Frisbee, rain and cold have kept all but the most dedicated IM teams off of the field. Hardcore looks to be determined between J.U.S.T.I.C.E (Junior Ultimate Sporting Team In a Carleton Enviroment) and TRT (Team Rookie Team). Midcore will be a rematch between perennial powerhouse, the Red Scare and up and coming Team on Top. Finally, softcore is led by two former midcore teams, Hue Cubed and Ordovicious.
Racquetball is flourishing under the leadership of Mat Tinley, and will undoubtedly only gain momentum in the future. Tennis and sand volleyball have understandably been somewhat hampered by the rain, but from talking to some players, this new warm spurt has everyone excited for the playoff push! So if you don’t play already, or even if you do, go out and support your friends at IM, because things looked poised for an exciting, or at least extra-muddy, finish. Either way, its guaranteed to be a lot of fun!
