Kathryn Schmidt defeats defending National Champion

<thryn Schmidt '12 continued her dramatic weekend at the ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Alabama. After a hard-fought loss to Julia Browne of Tufts University in the first round of the eight-player tournament, Schmidt took her experience and impeccable strokes into the back draw.

Her second opponent was Lorne McManigle of Emory University, the number one seed in the tournament and the 2009 NCAA (and defending) national champion. Schmidt held on during a lopsided match, and prevailed 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 over both her opponent and the humidity.

On Sunday, after a restful evening, Schmidt returned to the court in the finals of the back draw, competing for fifth place nationally. It took four hours and seventeen minutes, but Schmidt pulled out another remarkable victory: 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-1). Though celebrating on site was cut short as Schmidt had a flight to catch, but the magnitude of her victory was still incredible.
