<osted a better shooting percentage than Augsburg University from every spot on the floor and played even on the boards, but the Carleton College women’s basketball team still lost 81-58, in a game postponed from Jan. 30 due to winter weather.
The Knights (3-18, 0-14 MIAC) shot a season-best .523 from the field overall, .500 (7-of-14) from beyond the arc, and .714 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Augsburg (18-3, 13-1 MIAC) connect at a .435 clip overall, .250 from three-point range, and .684 at the free-throw line.
However, the visitors committed 27 turnovers and permitted the Auggies to grab 15 offensive rebounds. The home team cashed in plenty of those extra opportunities, concluding the game with a 35-4 edge in points off turnovers along with a 20-5 advantage in second-chance points.
Carleton gave the Auggies, listed just outside the national top-25, a back-and-forth battle for the first 26 minutes.
Augsburg began the game with a 10-0 run, but the Knights pulled within 17-15 early in the second quarter on Annabella Jensen’s (Fy./Salt Lake City, Utah/Hillcrest) layup. The hosts opened up a 37-24 lead early in the third quarter, only to see Carleton use a 13-5 run to make it a 42-37 contest with four minutes remaining in the period.
At that point, Augsburg closed the quarter on a 15-2 spurt and thwarted the Knights’ hopes for an upset.
Jensen and Anna Hughes (So./Glenview, Ill./New Trier) had 11 points apiece to pace the Knights, while Samantha Cooke (Jr./Chesterfield, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) chipped in 10 points and six rebounds.
Tamira McLemome led five Augsburg players in double figures, totaling 19 points on the evening. In the process the junior reached 1,000 points for her collegiate career.
