On Monday, January 6, the Schulze Café officially opened in Evelyn M. Anderson Hall, Carleton’s new science building. While a soft opening was planned for Fall term 2019, last minute construction in Anderson, commonly referred to as Evie, delayed the opening to January 2020.

The completion of the Schulze Café marks an important development not just for students who spend time in Evie, but also for those who live on the East side of campus.

“It’s great that I don’t have to walk across campus to Sayles when I’m working in Evie, especially in the winter,” said Jordan Shapiro ’20, a senior Geology major.

“I’m hyped to be able to read about and eat amino acids in the same place,” said Emma Ferrer ’20, a senior Biology major.

Named after one of the donors who aided in the construction of the new building, the Schulze Café will be open from 8am to 2pm Monday through Friday.

According to Carleton’s Dining Services Manager Katie McKenna, “It was discussed to have Schulze close earlier as the other Cafés are open. Bon Appétit is in constant communication with the College about needs, and will include the Schulze Café in these discussions.”

While the menu at Schulze Café is similar to that of the Weitz Café, Schulze provides soft serve ice cream.

The completion of the Schulze Café created two additional job positions, both of which were filled by transferring two members of Sayles Café staff to Anderson. A cashier position in Sayles and a line worker position in Burton have opened up as a result.

Bon Appétit does not plan to fill these roles with student positions, but notes that the employment is subject to change depending on business needs.

“As part of our discussions with the College, we talk about menu offerings and try to meet the needs of the campus community as they are brought to us. The best way to do this would be to come to Dining Office Hours during Thursday, Common Time on even weeks. This term we meet in LDC Conference Room,” said McKenna.

“We are very excited about featuring ice cream,” said McKenna.
