Superhero Party headed indoors due to student safety concerns

<nnual Superhero Party, the final major all-campus social event of the year, will look pretty different this year, thanks to some changes instituted by the Student Activities Office.

In response to student concerns about safety at the outdoor venue in years past, the dance will be held at the Grand Theater in Northfield. The dance has traditionally taken place in the fields behind the Recreation Center.

Nadine Sunderland, the Assistant Director of Student Activities mentioned student complaints about the poor lighting and security at Superhero Parties in the past.

“Students should feel safe walking on the sidewalks down to the Grand,” Sunderland said.

In response to student questions about the alcohol policy at the dance, Sunderland does not expect the change of location to interfere with students’ consumption. “We’re creating an event where drinking is okay,” she said, emphasizing that alcohol will be available for students 21 and over.
The dance used to be entirely student run, with different students each year volunteering to coordinate the DJ, lights, and activities at the dance.

This year’s dance will feature free pizza, fog machines, and black lights and glow-in-the-dark markers.
Music and Dance Program Assistants Erin Lopez ’13 and Sonali Gupta ’12 organized the dance this year—the first time SAO has coordinated the Superhero Party.

“Hosting a large event is hard,” Sunderland said, explaining the difficulties for students to shut down campus wide event.

Sunderland said SAO eventually hopes to take the Superhero Party back outdoors. As it stands, it’s just a matter of dollars and cents. “We don’t have the funding for that this year,” Sunderland said.
The Superhero Party will now join Battle of the Bands and the Senior Prom as the Carleton events hosted at the Grand.

“The Senior Prom at the Grand has always been a success, and the Grand is excited to have us there.”
