The Carleton College men’s tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season as the Knights won every singles match and prevailed, 8-1, over College of St. Scholastica.
“This weekend proved to be a strong start for the team,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. “Lots of challenges ahead, but this group of gentlemen would not want it any other way.”
Andrew Hwang (Sr./Brookfield, Wis./University School) and Erik Johnson (Jr./Grand Forks, N.D./ Red River) proved worthy of their ranking as the No. 14 tandem in the central region as the duo cruised to an 8-2 victory at first doubles.
Meanwhile, Ezra Frankel (So./ Lincoln, Mass./Belmont Hill School) and Kevin Mei (Fy./Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) rallied from a 6-5 deficit and secured an 8-6 triumph at second doubles.
“Ezra and Kevin played some amazing points to claw back into the match,” said Zweifel. “Those two can create as much trouble for opponents as a Seth Rogen and James Franco movie.”
Leading the team score, 2-1, after doubles play, the Knights dominated upon moving to singles as Johnson, Kevin Mei, Hwang, Patton McClelland (So./Rock Hill, S.C./Charlotte Latin School), Frankel, and Kevin Hurley (Fy./Novi, Mich./Meadowbrook) each prevailed in straight sets.
Kevin Hurley made his college debut winning at six singles by a 6-2, 6-1 tally. “Like the honey badger, Kevin H. is usually a reserved creature, but when provoked can inflict considerable damage,” said Zweifel.
The Knights will travel to Wisconsin next weekend for matches against Carroll College and Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday, Feb. 7 followed by a Sunday morning contest against Carthage College.
