<st Friday, the men’s track and field team competed at the St. Olaf Invitational at the Tostrud Center. Saturday, a handful of athletes traveled to the Warren Bowlus Open at Wisconsin-Stout.
Michael Sanders ’10 won twice over the weekend, taking the 600-yard dash at St. Olaf and the 1000-meter run at Stout.
Sanders battled fatigue he acquired form pulling an all-nighter to finish the first version of his physics comps during the week, then sprinted to a 1:15.03 victory Friday night.
Saturday, the Iowa native notched a four-second win, completing the five-lap event in 2:38.33. Sanders has shown that running cross country in the fall is an excellent way to train for the long sprints.
C.J. Dale ’13 remains undefeated in his collegiate long jump career, defeating a much stronger field this week at St. Olaf. The freshman leaped 6.15 meters, breaking the 20-foot barrier by over two inches.
In the high jump, Dylan Cheever ’13 cleared 1.85 meters for his collegiate best, taking third place. His mark will likely qualify him for the MIAC Championships.
Ty Martin ’11 took second in the 55-meter hurdles, running 8.33 in the finals after an 8.32 clocking in the prelims.
During the first round of the event, Michael Austin ’13 tied the world record for most hurdles knocked over with five.
The distance runners enjoyed a stellar meet, with Josh Campbell ’13 making his collegiate debut to take third in the 1000 meters, running 2:41.26 despite going out extremely slow.
Aaron Hirsh ’13 won the first section of the mile, displaying an incredible finishing kick as he covered the bell lap in just over 30 seconds for a 4:41.99. Two fools from Wisconsin-River Falls went out super hard, only to fall to the finishes of Hirsh and Adam Scherling ’13.
Bobby Davis ’13 ran his first 3000-meter race, taking third in 9:07.92, just a fraction of a second ahead of Kian Flynn ’12.
The Knights will not race this weekend, opting instead to officiate the women’s track meet tonight at the Rec Center. They will resume action next Saturday at their lone regular season home meet, the Meet of the Hearts.
As for the women’s meet, the Knights will face St. Ben’s in a dual meet at our very own Rec Center. It should be a good one as the team now has had two more weeks of training since its last competition, save for Nikki Reich ’10 and Clare Franco ’12. Reich competed at Olaf last week, taking 3rd in the 3000 meter run. The next day Franco ran the 800 meters at UW-Stout. She somehow managed to forget her racing shoes and upon arriving immediately found a competitor kind enough to lend spikes to her. Franco then proceeded to run a 2:19, crossing the finish line nearly 3 seconds before the next competitor.
Inspired by these two performances, the team has had a strong week of training and is ready to try out some new events, getting some of the distance runners in the 1000 and DMR while other athletes will be competing in the shot and jumps for the first time this season. Time to get some more Carls up on those performance lists!
The team hopes to see you at the competition tonight and would also like to thank the men’s team in advance for running the meet.
