College Bids Farewell to GSC Leader

<r Student Life,

It is with mixed emotions that we announce a new adventure ahead for Kaaren Williamsen, Carleton’s Gender and Sexuality Center Director and Title IX Deputy for Sexual Violence Prevention. Kaaren has recently accepted a newly created position at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania as their Title IX Coordinator.  She has been at Carleton since 1999 and began her work as a Hall Director and LGBT Adviser. Shortly thereafter, in 2001, she became the founding director of the Gender and Sexuality Center, one of the first of its kind nationally.  Most recently, Kaaren has re-created the sexual violence prevention and sexual health education program. It, too, is recognized nationally as a robust and effective program. Kaaren is also a member of the Title IX Lead Team, which was created following the review of the student-student sexual misconduct process in 2009. The Lead team is a collaborative approach to sexual misconduct and part of a larger model she will undoubtedly share with Swarthmore.
Kaaren will start her new position at Swarthmore in early July. She will be at Carleton through the end the 2013-2014 academic year and plans to participate in Reunion activities.  This spring a national search will ensue to fill her position at Carleton.  While we are sorry to see Kaaren leave Carleton, we are pleased to see her professional skills recognized in this way. She has left an important legacy at Carleton. Swarthmore will be fortunate to benefit from her expertise.
A send off will be planned for later this term so that we can appropriately celebrate and thank her for her outstanding service to the Carleton community and to wish her well on her new adventure!

Sincerely,

Hudlin and Julie
