Claire Spencer (Jr./Newport News, Va./Menchville) did her part to help the Carleton College women’s tennis team remain undefeated this season as the Knights blanked the College of Saint Benedict, 9-0. With the triumph, the No. 26-ranked team in the country improves to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in MIAC matches.
The Knights have yet to surrender a team point in conference action, defeating Saint Mary’s, Ham- line, and now Saint Benedict by identical 9-0 margins.
Today, Spencer was involved in two of the more dominating performances, teaming with Danielle Vasiliev (Fy./Lincolnshire, Ill./ Stevenson) for an 8-0 doubles win before prevailing 6-0, 6-2 in her singles match.
Joining Spencer in claiming doubles and singles victories were junior Mikayla Becich (Bradford- woods, Pa./North Allegheny) and rookies Vasiliev and Alana Danieu (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora).
Carleton swept doubles, with the closest match coming at the first slot where Becich and Caitlin Shea (So./ Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township West) prevailed by an 8-3 margin.
All six singles matches were straight-set results for the Knights. Becich got a challenge from Laura Finn before prevailing 7-5, 6-1. No other Carleton player lost more than three games in any set.
The Knights have eight days until they take the court again, this time they have the unique opportunity to battle the University of Minnesota, a nationally-ranked NCAA Division I program. The March 1 meeting will mark the eighth consecutive season these two programs have played. This year’s competition at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis begins at 4:00 p.m.
