<r the first time in a long while, the women’s track team competed in the Carleton Relays last Saturday. A number of alums returned to the track and a good time was had by all, despite the rainy weather.
Not only did the team have a good time, but they ran many good times. In the 1500m Tori Ostenso ’15 dropped nine seconds off her time from two weeks ago and Laura Newcombe ’13 dropped seven.
Lindsay Turchan ’15 had a ridiculously fast kick to pass half the field in the last lap and take the victory in heat two. In heat two, her teammates tried to do the same, taking spots one and 3-6. Alison Smyth ’12 took the top spot, despite the speed of her teammates. Colette Celichowski ’15 dipped under 4:50 in her career debut at that distance and Kaitlin Randolph ’12 ran nine seconds faster than she did two weeks ago.
Ellie Wilson ’15 was another event winner for the Knights, taking the 400m dash with what is now the top time in the conference. Anna Persmarck ’15 took fifth in the same event, running well despite the inclement weather. Persmarck would go on to have a solid 200m race while Wilson anchored the Knights’ third placing 4 x 400m relay.
The other relay the Knights ran, the 4 x 800m, did fairly well. They won the event by 36 seconds, running the second-fastest time ever officially recorded by a Carleton team. The Knights also did well in the open 800m, with Haley Johnson ’13 taking second and Claire Karbon in sixth with a season’s best time. Also taking sixth in her respective event was Shannon Mueller ’12, dropping ten seconds off her best time in the 5000m run.
Kao Sutton ’14 continued to improve in the hammer throw, hurling it farther than she can toss a disc—not a small feat, considering that she placed second in the discus throw. Avery Johnson ’15 continued to be Carleton’s top spear thrower, with Jessa Youso ’13 and Clare Franco ’12 joining her in the finals
This week will be an exciting one for the Knights—there are only two more weeks of the regular season left, so everyone is gearing up for some top performances before the conference championships. The team sent three athletes to compete in the 10k at the Drake Relays last night and will have a 4 x 800m team competing tomorrow. The rest of the squad will be at St. Mary’s on Saturday, tuning up before the last regular season competition.
