<st weekend, Syzygy battled summer-like heat, exhaustion, and some of the nation’s best Ultimate Frisbee teams at the Women’s College Centex in Austin, Texas.
The tournament, which is the hallmark kick-off of Syzygy’s spring season, came at the tail end of a week of intense training and bonding in the Lone Star State. Led by heavenly-bodied captains Taylor Want, Anna Reed and Elise Rasmussen, the team spent six days eating, sleeping, cooking, and playing five hours of Frisbee per day together.
Each year, this tournament proves to be a measure of Syzygy’s mental and physical toughness. This year proved to be no different, with daytime temperatures hovering around 85°F. Fortunately, both rookies and returners showed no fear when playing against well-known powerhouse Ultimate Frisbee schools like UCSB and UCLA, provided intense energy, excitement and skill on the field.
On day one of the tournament, Syzygy broke seed by beating Virginia on a “universe point” (Ultimate’s “sudden death” tiebreaker situation, in which the team that scores the next point automatically wins). Though they put up a tremendous fight, the team lost narrowly to Iowa State, and fell by just two points to defending national runner-up UCSB.
By Sunday, eight days of practice were taking their toll. However, Syzygy still managed to pull out a decisive win against Northwestern before falling to UCLA, Texas and North Carolina.
Syzygy is excited to build on the beautiful Ultimate they played in Texas in the coming weeks as they prepare to face local rivals in Conference third weekend.
