Last Saturday he was just that, finishing the 110 meter hurdles at the Hamline Invitational in 15.00 seconds, good enough to break 2009 graduate Tom Ballinger’s school record by 0.01 seconds and handily win the event.
“Ty knows how to slice the baloney thin,” said Knights coach Dave Ricks.
Saturday’s meet was the first chance for the entire Knights team to suit up and compete outdoors together, except for the javelin throwers, whose event was cancelled earlier in the week due to a snowy competition area. But the weather turned out beautiful for a return to the outdoors and by the end of the day a sunburned bunch of Carls made their merry way home to Northfield after putting forth strong performances.
While Martin’s performance clearly led the way, Lobo James ‘14 took third place in the high jump, establishing a new personal best by clearing 1.88 meters.
Carleton’s relays had a great amount of success, as the 4×400 meter relay ran a strong 3:30 to place fourth out of 17 teams and the 4×100 meter relay took second, completing the race in 44.96 seconds.
John Davis ’11 brought his impeccable form back to the steeplechase to place sixth in 9:47. Dylan Cheever ’13 joined Davis in the steeplechase, adding to the increasingly diverse set of events he has competed in this season. Cheever also competed in the high jump, 110 meter hurdles, and 100 meter dash.
Marcus Huderle ’14 finished 10th in the 5000 meters in a time of 15:54. Just missing the 16-minute barrier, but primed to dip under later in the season, Jacob Hoerger ’14 and Aaron Hirsh ’13 clocked 16:00 and 16:01, respectively.
Widely regarded as the most consistent 1500-meter runner in the MIAC, Kian Flynn ’12 lived up to his billing by posting his third consecutive time of 4:14 in his first appearance of the season. Flynn has run his last seven 1500 meter races in either 4:14 or 4:12. Close behind came Colin Sinclair ’11, who ran 4:16. Brian Spisiak ’13 completed his first ever 1500 meters in 4:23 while Andy Hardt ’13 returned from swimming to run 4:32, a ten second personal best. Famous Johnson ’12 closed hard to finish in 4:34, and Ben Parks ‘11 made his long-awaited return to the track as well.
Joshua Estes ’14 set personal bests of 11.66 seconds in the 100 meters and 23.73 in the 200 meters. James Morrissey ‘12 sprinted a solid 52.83 seconds in the 400 meters while Nick Herringer ‘14 followed less than a second behind. In the 800 meters, Josh Campbell ’13 and Matt Harrison ’13 both set season bests, running the two-lap race in 2:02 and 2:04. Michael Tolan ‘14 kept the dream alive, running a personal best of 2:08, while Phil Juda ‘13, a head taller than anyone else in his heat, finished in 2:09, another personal best.
“Miami” Mike Austin broke 60 seconds for the first time in the 400 meter hurdles, good enough to finish eighth in the event. Jordan Soteros ‘14, making his season debut, cleared 4.00 meters to finish 10th. Soteros hit a mark of 6.03 meters in the long jump, while C.J. Dale ’13 jumped 5.96 meters.
This weekend the Knights travel to scenic Decorah, Iowa, home of Michael Knudson ’11, to compete at the Luther Relays.
