<ver ’11 was a red-hot 5-for-5 from beyond the arc and finished with 17 points in a 67-46 Knights (9-11, 8-9 MIAC) victory over the St. Mary’s Cardinals on Wednesday. Senior Hannah Oken-Berg moved to sixth in career rebounds while posting 16 points and 10 rebounds.
With two early treys from Weaver, the Knights jumped out to a 10-5 advantage. Carleton held onto this lead for the entire first half, entering halftime with a 34-25 lead.
In the second half, the Cardinals fought to stay in the game, and they actually drew within eight points of the Knights with about 14 minutes left in the game. But Coach Metcalf-Filzen’s team responded with a 13-0 run, and closed out the game to win 67-46.
The story of the game was three-point shooting. On one side of the court, Weaver was heating up the gym with her hot shooting, and the Knights made 58.3 percent of their three-point attempts. On the other side, the Cardinals’ shooters were so cold they may have been treated for frostbite after the game. St. Mary’s was a paltry 3-for-23 from beyond the arc.
The win over St. Mary’s was a source of redemption for the Knights after a tough 52-48 loss to St. Olaf on Monday. In contrast to St. Mary’s, the Oles were feeling it from long range, shooting 47.1 percent from three-point land. In addition, Carleton struggled to hold on to the basketball, committing a whopping 23 turnovers.
This disparity in performance led to a 44-35 Oles lead with four minutes left. Weaver hit a trio of threes in dramatic fashion to close within two points with 11 seconds left. Unfortunately for the Knights, St. Olaf’s Jamie Erdahl hit two free throws to seal the 52-48 victory for the Oles.
Last Saturday, the Knights had their finest performance of the week with an 87-73 victory over the Hamline University Pipers. Freshman Megan Erlandson had an impressive 18 points and was 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
The first half was a hard-fought contest as the teams entered their locker rooms tied 34-34. However, in the second half, Carleton scored a staggering 53 points and shot a sizzling 60 percent. On defense, the Knights had a season-best ten steals, and they limited the Pipers to 33.3% shooting in the second half.
Alongside Erlandson, Annie Isler ’09 performed well, tallying a season-high 15 points and four assists. In the post, senior Sarah Lincoln contributed 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Knights will try to climb back into the MIAC Playoffs picture when they face St. Thomas in West Gym on Saturday. Tipoff will be at 1:00 p.m. Knights Online will be featuring a live web broadcast of the game.
