Distance runners lead Knights at St. Olaf meet

<oor season is already off to a good start for the lady Knights after a successful season opener last Friday at St. Olaf’s Tostrud Center. The distance core showed their strength, as the Knights claimed wins in the three longest events on the track, the 1000, the mile, and the 3000 meters.

Several of the distance runners ran personal bests, claiming victories along the way. Laura Roach ‘10 won the 1000m run and just barely outran Heather Hoecker ‘08 for the title in the mile, as both ladies set personal bests. Roach finished in 5:18.63 and Hoecker finished in 5:18.65. Junior Karen Campbell rounded out Carleton’s 1-2-3 finish in the 1000, a feat she and Hoecker, along with Irene

Koplinka-Loehr ’10 repeated in the 3000. Campbell won the 3000m with a time of 10:57.96, with Koplinka-Loehr coming in second and Hoecker third.

Sprinter Kelsey Donald ’10 also started her season off well with second and third place finishes in the 200 and the 55 meters, respectively. She crossed the finish line in 27.95 for the 200, and in 7.78 in the 55 meter dash. In the field events, Brasil Perez-Lukes ’11 opened up with an impressive 1.5m (4’ 11”) mark in the high jump, to finish second. Other top three performances included Amy Elson ’10 in the triple jump, finishing third with a jump of 9.71 meters and Molly Christian ’08 in the weight throw throwing 14.38 meters, nearly matching her personal best and finishing second.

The Knights are in action this evening in the Carleton Recreation Center in a meet featuring athletes from Carleton, St. Olaf, St. Thomas, and Winona State. Competition begins at 6:00 p.m.
