Buckley Strong in SJU Invitational

<l two rounds of the Saint John’s Spring Invitational men’s golf tournament were canceled due to rain, shortening the tournament to 18 holes. Aaron Buckley ‘14 fired an opening round four-over par 76 in Saturday’s first round and finished in a tie for 27th.

Aided by a shot hit left-handed from 120 yards, Buckley was at even par over the front nine of the opening round at St. Cloud Country Club. His 76 is one stroke off his career-best performance in last year’s season opener.

Playing with only four golfers due to campus commitments for the other three team members, the Knights finished with a team score of 338, landing them in 17th out of 18 teams.

Competing in less than ideal conditions, Jorde Ranum ‘15 carded his third-best score of the year, tallying 83 strokes. Brian Herlihy ‘16 and Matt Meier ‘17 made their spring debuts.

Saint John’s own Casey Vangsness placed first at the Invitational, with a 68 stroke performance, four under par. Six other golfers at the event finished under par.

The Saint John’s Invitational was only the second event that the team attended this spring, due to the St. Mary’s Invitational being rained out early in April.

Carleton’s season is slated to conclude with the “Rusty Putter” dual match against cross-town foe St. Olaf College, when the Knights will look to finish what has been a difficult season on a high note. The date of this competition has yet to be announced.
