Carleton increases Internet bandwidth

<rleton increased its Internet bandwidth on Jan 19th, 2010. Our bandwidth rose from 125 Megabits per second (Mbps), to 200 Mbps, an expansion of 60 percent. This is the first increase in over 2 years.

A bandwidth increase allows more bits (1s and 0s) to flow into and out of Carleton in a given amount of time, but does not affect the speed of those bits. The bits will not travel any faster when you surf the web, but the information may get to you quicker because more of it can now pass through Carleton’s electronics.

For an analogy, imagine a bigger garden hose, through which more water can flow. (And for the technically minded, this increase is for our Commodity Internet. Internet2 bandwidth remains at 1Gbps.)
