Women’s tennis: season update

<rleton’s women’s tennis team started 2009 conference play with three victories that landed them atop the MIAC standings.

First, Kathryn Schmidt ’12 and Erin Gudul ’12 led the Knights to a 8-1 victory over Hamline . Gudul and Schmidt both won straight set matches and dominated doubles 8-1. Captains Hannah Goldberg ’10 and Frances Leung ’10 who were both victorious in both singles and doubles joined them. Hannah Clemons ’10 had the closest match of the day, but prevailed 10-5 in her third set tiebreaker.

The women followed their initial victory with an even more decisive 9-0 win over St. Mary’s. The following Sunday was the first true conference test for the team. For the first time, the Knights only won one of the doubles points, which belonged to Schmidt and Gudul. In singles, the two freshmen once again pulled out crucial victories. They were followed by another third set win on the racket of Clemons, who won another tiebreaker 11-9.
