<e you interested in working one on one with Northfield youth? Don’t have a ton of time, but want to make a difference?
ACT has several programs that match up Carleton students as mentors or tutors with elementary, middle, and high school students in Northfield.
Project Friendship matches college students with elementary school youth (grades 2nd-7th) from the Northfield schools. The goal of the program is to develop strong friendships between college students who have made positive choices in their lives and children who need such role models. Pairs meet once a week, and additionally participate with other pairs in a large group activity a few times a term.
Main Street Mentors creates mentorships between Carleton students and high school and middle school students from the Key (also called the Northfield Union of Youth), a youth-run youth center whose mission is to give voice and empower area youth. Matches meet once a week for an hour and are made based on a common interest, which can range from academic areas like foreign languages or biology to sports, art, music, calligraphy, anything! While the program is open to any middle and high schoolers that want to participate, it focuses on at-risk youth, providing them with a learning experience and a positive role model.
Volunteer Tutoring is a program that pairs volunteer tutors with local elementary, middle, and high school students. Parents can request a tutor for their child by calling the ACT center, and volunteer college student tutors are found that match the subject area needed. Tutors and tutees meet one on one once a week in a public location such as Sayles or downtown. All subject areas are needed, especially math and science.
