<ong>Eat Local? In the winter? Take the challenge!
Even during the winter, there is a plethora of delicious ingredients available that are produced locally. Although our choices of locally-grown fresh, perishable fruits and vegetables is limited at this time of year, just think of all the local foods that are available right now: frozen fruits and vegetables, various root vegetables, hydroponically-grown lettuce, hot-house tomatoes, flours and grains, bread and baked goods, meats, milk, eggs, cheese, sauerkraut, and even frozen pizza. You can eat local in the winter, and there’s no better time to try than the Winter Eat Local Challenge! From March 7 th to March 13th Just Food Co-op challenges you to eat 50% of your diet from the 5-state area (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota).
Everyone is welcome to participate in the Winter Eat Local Challenge, and can do so privately or by signing up at the poster at the front of the store. Just Food will provide menu ideas and has labeled all of its local foods so that customers can easily find them. And for those who don’t want to cook, the Just Food deli will have lots of great options that meet the local guidelines- including weekday hot bar items.
To help families prepare for the challenge, Just Food Co-op will hold an Eat Local sample day on Saturday, March 5 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. There, community members will have the chance to try a variety of locally-produced foods, and even meet a few producers! Then, on Tuesday, March 8, Just Food will hold a class to help plan your life around local, seasonal foods called “Seasonal Eating Calendar.” The class is $15 ($12 Co-op owners) and preregistration is required. Finally, Just Food’s CSA Day will be Saturday, March 8 from 11-2. CSA Day attendees will have the opportunity to purchase a farm share from one of the many local Community Supported farms.
