We are writing to express concern about some sentiments expressed in Sam Benshoof’s letter “Farewell to Sodexho” published in last week’s Carletonian. While we are sure Mr. Benshoof did not intend offense, the letter might be unintentionally hurtful to the many fine people working in Carleton’s food service, many of whom have served students for many years. We think it is important to remember that the employees of Sodexho are wrestling with possible job losses, family disruptions or at least uncertainty.
Regardless of any complaints about the quality of cafeteria food, surely the ending of many long term relationships between members of the Carleton community is something to mourn, not make light of.
It may be easy to see Sodexho as merely a corporate entity. But we would remind Mr. Benshoof and the community that the corporation is manifested on our campus in real people. As faculty and students, we are blessed to be supported by these dedicated individuals, in food service and throughout the college. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to them for doing so well the critical work that sustains Carleton, and wish them the best in the midst of this transition.
